Documentation of Your Business Processes & Systems

The truth is that a small business can't afford not to document its systems.

Documentation of a Custom Software Product
A common misconception among small business owners is that they can't afford to document their custom-developed systems. The truth is that the opposite is true — a small business can't afford not to document its systems and related processes.

The choice really is to pay for the necessary documentation up front — or to likely pay it several times over throughout the life of the product.

Allow me to explain the long-term, often recurring costs of not having adequate*systems documentation...

The Costs of Not Having Adequate*Documentation

What hard and soft costs are you likely to incur in the long-run without adequate documentation on both the client and developer ends?
  • Higher user training costs
  • Higher staff turnover costs
  • Higher system support costs
  • More costly future modifications
  • More challenging cross-training of users
  • More dependence on your support company.

Don't make the mistake 80%+ of small businesses and developers make — invest in the documentation up front.

So don't make the mistake 80%+ of small businesses and developers make — invest in the documentation up front.
Doing so will allow you to avoid the future operational disruptions, frustrations, and unnecessary costs you are
guaranteed to experience without it...

*What is "Adequate" Documentation?

Software, Project and Business Documentation

As a rule, I suggest that my clients invest in the following documentation for their website and/or any custom-developed database products:
  • REQUIREMENTS Documentation: The information you provide to your developer before and during development to explain your company's needs. (Click here for more details on requirements.)

  • FLOWCHARTS of Your Key Business Processes — especially those integrated with your website or custom database. These flows are invaluable to management as well as to whatever support company you are working with.

  • USER DOCUMENTATION: This doesn't have to be complex! Simple screenshots of menus, webpages or database layouts, with brief related instructions for the user will suffice. This type of documentation is particularly useful for training and cross-training purposes.

Take the documentation burden off of you and your team, and put it on DSS.  I have decades of experience in creating technical documentation and am highly-skilled at producing it time-efficiently and cost-effectively.

If you have custom software products that need documenting, please contact me today.   See below for samples of the type of documentation that will pay off for your business in the years ahead.
