The Culprit
What is the primary cause of painful project results such as those listed above?
Ineffective and inadequate client-developer communication.
I know because I've experienced the consequences of poor communication from both sides of development projects, i.e., as the client and also as the developer.
No one wins when communication fails — neither client nor developer.
Once I grasped this truth, I set about to find ways to improve client-developer communication — and, ironically, wound up making a career of it.
The Challenge

Unlike large corporations, small businesses rarely have the expertise in-house to communicate effectively during development projects. Large corporations with hefty budgets have people on staff dedicated to the client-developer communication effort. Not so with most small businesses. Small business clients struggle with the daunting task of communicating their needs ("requirements") to their developer. Small business developers struggle with the demands of extracting and clarifying their client's needs. And both clients and developers struggle to find the time, money, and in-house expertise to handle the abundance of back-and-forth communication typically required during product development. This communication is essential to the quality of the final product. So the challenge was clear to me: Identify services and tools that would enable small business clients and developers to communicate time-efficiently, and cost-effectively. |
